AICP & ASC

The American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is the APA’s professional institute, providing recognized leadership nationwide in the certification of professional planners, ethics, professional development, planning education, and the standards of planning practice. Certification not only distinguishes you from other planning professionals but also demonstrates to others that the profession values competence and recognizes planners who have achieved a level of competence beyond the most basic level and stay current in their field.

The Advanced Specialty Certification (ASC) enables AICP–credentialed planners to be recognized for their knowledge, experience, and leadership skills in specialized areas of planning.

ASC designations include:

  • AICP Certified Transportation Planner
  • AICP Certified Environmental Planner
  • AICP Certified Urban Designer

For more information on these designations please visit www.planning.org/certification.  If you have any questions, or are ready to begin preparing for an exam, please contact APA Delaware’s Professional Development Officer.  If you are a chapter member, we can offer you some financial assistance in preparing for the AICP and you may also qualify for a reduced examination fee.  We will also help you to study!

Certification Maintenance

AICP members and those with an ASC designation are required to comply with Certification Maintenance requirements which include 32 credit hours of training per two-year period. The Certification Maintenance program links certified planners to training opportunities that will keep them up to date with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices.

A reminder for those folks in need of CM’s during the current grace period, your options to obtain CM credits in little time with minimal expenses are limited to the free CM’s provided by APA.

If you require CM’s, you still have options to earn them.  As most know, the Chapter participates in the nationwide Planning Webcast Consortium that offers free CVM-eligible webinars nearly every Friday.  Please take a look and register for upcoming events at: http://www.ohioplanning.org/aws/APAOH/pt/sp/development_webcast

The APA has a few free CM events and webinars at https://conference.planning.org/cm/free/.  Between the two sources, a member could accumulate sufficient CM’s for a reporting period!  And the APA and a few Consortium webinars, even ethics and law webinars, are available at any time you have a free hour or two.

As always, if you need any additional information or assistance with Certification Maintenance or you are interested in joining the ranks of the Certified, please contact Jim Galvin, Delaware Chapter Professional Development Officer (PDO) at james.galvin@doverkentmpo.org.
